After the last take

There is a particular kind of silence that arrives after the final take. A second earlier, the room was full of voice, searching and dozens of tiny decisions. Then all that remains is the sound in my headphones and the feeling that, this time, I said exactly what I meant.

I used to think the best vocal was the most perfect one. Now I am more likely to keep the breath, the slight crack or the line that is imperfect but true. Those are the moments that make a song feel alive.

Finishing a recording can be harder than starting it. You have to stop correcting every detail and allow the music to exist without you. Maybe every release is another small exercise in letting go.

Tonight I walked out of the studio into the city and, for the first time, did not want to go back and record the final line again. That is how I know the song is ready.
